Seepage, a Sump Failure, or a Backup
| Source | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| A seeping foundation crack | Saturated ground outside finds a path through the wall or floor, usually near the base. |
| A sump pump failure | The pump stops, often during an outage, and the pit overflows. Usually clean water. |
| A backed-up sewer | Rises through a floor drain instead of a crack. Assume contamination and keep the area clear. |
What to Do Before We Arrive
- Keep clear of standing water if it's anywhere near power.
- Photograph the water's high mark and the source if you can tell.
- Get what you can off the floor.
- Call so a crew starts the same visit.
Dearborn, specifically. The Rouge River runs directly through Dearborn, where Henry Ford dammed it between 1910 and 1920 for hydroelectric power and then, after buying 2,000 acres along the lower river in 1915, dredged its turning basin to about 20 feet in 1918 so freighters could reach the Ford Rouge Complex, turning that stretch into what the National Park Service calls an essentially artificial industrial waterway. On May 1, 2019, two to four inches of rain fell in about four hours over the I-94 corridor, hitting the Dearborn Heights area hardest with roughly 5,000 homes reporting basement flooding; the Lower Rouge River at Dearborn crested just above 10.5 feet that afternoon as Ecorse Creek in neighboring Dearborn Heights peaked at 9.77 feet.
